How Big Are Your Hamsters? |
| Posted by TeddyMisty - 01-27-09 15:58 - 64 comments |
 |
I've always thought that Teddy is a big hamster but I found out last night when I weighed him that he is only 149gram so perhaps he is not so big after all cause I know other hamsters can weigh around 200 grams.
I think the fact the he is long haired creates the illusion that he is big
so how big are your hamsters, lets weigh them and find out |

Introducing Gilly |
| Posted by furrypolka - 11-21-09 21:28 - 8 comments |
 |
After a very unfortunate start to his life with us (coming down with wet tail after only two days), Gilly is now much better and is looking healthy and bright and well again. This is the red eyed cream banded boy we got from Pets at Home a few weeks ago, he is still on dry rations only and we have only just started handling him after his illness, but he is a bonny little thing and he is already fairly tame. I have to say that the manager of our local store was very concerned about him and he does appear to really care about the animals he sells, and he has clearly been handled while he was with them.
Anyway here he is, still a little on the small side which is to be expected given his ancestry and his start in life, but I hope he will get stronger soon.

Some How I Ended Up With The Pandabear Ham Too |
| Posted by hammiehamham - 11-21-09 05:58 - 16 comments |

Well, I got a call about the Pandabear hamster with nerve damage it can't walk straight he flops over on his back all of a sudden and seems really wobbly. They said he was born that way, but I don't see how he could have lived like that, but they were going to ship him back and so I shelled out $15.00 then ran and bought him a little bin cage. I'm taking him to the vet Monday morning. What should I expect? He's such a sweety I hope he can live and not have to be PTS. He rocks back and forth pretty badly too. He eats anf drinks well enough i've been holding him up and using a seringe to make sure he gets enough water as well as keeping him warm, he climbs around and seem a bit shy, but curious so keep him in your thoughts poor baby. I'll try and post a video and pic later. Anyone have a hamster live through this kind of thing? |

I Did It Again! |

She is an orange-white hamster from Petco..yes yes I know pet store. She is a teddy bear hamster. I had gone there for an emergency water bottle and turned the corner near the hammies and there she was staring at me...i was just gonna talk to her for abit then head home with the bottle, I looked at there pandabear hams and one looked like it had a stroke it couldn't walk straight it would fall on its back and so on it made me wanna cry.., but the guy came around to give them more water and saw him grab her tail and pick her up with it. He then proceded to toss her into the cage next to her full of males I was horrified I went over reached in picked her up and took her to the check out. $38.00 for a water bottle, a food dish and her. Luckly I had an extra bin cage set up for emergences so..I don't know what to expect i've only had dwarf, granted 6 dwarfs, but I know next to nothing about Syrians or teddy bears or anything, but I couldn't leave her seh put her paw against the glass and looked at me..I even tried to buy the poor panda bear, but they refused..she runs around and tries to almost climb out of the bin, but she runs on her wheel and eats so I hope she is okay. I'll watch her and hope she is otherwise healthy..any tips on teddybear hams? i'm at a loss with her..but not once did she bite me! |

New Foster Baby Not Eating |
| Posted by scotia - 11-18-09 08:46 - 18 comments |

I have taken on two more foster hamsters, till they find new homes. One girl is fine, eating everything in sight, but the other one, a tiny teddy girl is not eating or putting on weight. When i got her on saturday she weighed just 33g!!! (and im pretty sure a few grams of that is her fur!) I have tried normal hamster food, baby food, cottage cheese, carrots, cucumber. She nibbles on bits of carrot and has tried a tiny bit of the baby food but im worried shes not getting enough. Does anyone have any other ideas what i can give her to tempt her to eat? She has had a very stressful few days, (was rescued from drunk teenagers on the street in the middle of the night), so im hoping its just taking her a while to settle but any ideas to tempt her would be much appreciated. Thanks |

How Much Exercise Does Your Hamster Get |
| Posted by Pickles - 11-17-09 23:17 - 5 comments |
|
Hello all,
I hope you don't mind me posting again but I am curious as to how much exercise your hamsters get. I try and give my two as much as possible, they get at least an hour a night in their balls and are handled too. I don't like putting them in the balls to much but they did chew my carpet a lot and so I think a ball is safer.
Any comments gratefully received.

Not Again! |

Hey guys
Yet another incident with two of my syrians, Leon and Rio. I always put Pixies cage on top of Leons so he can't push the lid open and escape. but yesterday, I left Pixie's cage only halfway on Leons and forgot to put it up properly, so Leon escaped...and somehow right into Rio's cage!! I leave the lid a little off of Rio's cage so he gets enough ventialation.
so this morning, I find a quiet Leon sitting on top of Rio's wooden castle, and Rio running in his wheel.
Poor Leon, he had two tiny bloody patch near his nose, and another one on one of his foot. Rio got it worse, he has a scratch on his right cheek and one or two bitemarks on his left side. None of the wound seemed very fresh, the blood was dried on all of them. And none of them seemed too big, but still..
Both of them seem to be acting fine otherwise, eating and walking / running normally, both ate their "painkiller" raisin happily...
I feel so so horribly bad, I love them both so so so much, I can't believe I let them down again
I did not have a chance to clean any wounds or anything, but planning to check them out immediately when I got home at 6 pm.
Any idead what I can use to clean the wounds and what else I should do?
Many Thanks |

New Addition And Strange Noises |
| Posted by Pickles - 11-16-09 23:27 - 8 comments |

Hello everyone,
I recently lost Lilly to a stomach infection and despite several visits to the vet and various treatments we couldn't save her
So, on sunday my fiancee and I took a trip to the local rescue centre where we saw 3 very lovely syrian hamsters. The only thing about the hamsters is that they are twice the size of any other hamster that I had seen before. Anyway, I couldn't resist them and adopted one and brought her home yesterday. Her name is Wilber, I know it's a boys name but she looks like a Wilber.
When Wilber was rescued she was taken by the animal shelter along with her 2 sisters and six rats. Immediately they were checked by the vet and given the all clear. Although to me she looks very over weight (but i could be wrong) she is so big i have to hold her with two hands and she is in a rat's exercise ball.
Sorry for the long blub but my question is this: Whenever I hold her she makes some very strange noise like a popping sound, definitely not teeth chomping or anything like that. Does anyone know what this is? It is very strange. Wilber is a golden syrian and has black eyes also but the black lining around her eyes seems to have bobbled. I know she is over a year old so do you think the noises and bobbling is a result of that or something else.
She was seen by a vet yesterday to get the all clear so I didn't really want to take her again.
Any thoughts would be very much appreciated.

My Henry's A Messy Boy! |

haha! my new hamster Henry is definitely a messy hamster than my girlie hammie Honey was. When I come down in the morning and look at his cage, on his platform of his cambridge cage, he poos and wees all over it during the night whilst he is out playing. And his wheel is all sticky with wee. I think he wees on his platform and still goes around in it! LOL ewww. I have to wash the platform and wheel. Messy Boy!!!! He does wee and poo in a corner at the bottom of his cage but sometimes i think when he's on his platform he can't be bothered to go down to his wee corner LOL so my Henry is a messy and lazy lil' boy! but I love him and he gets away with it really coz he's got such a cute face when he looks at me
Do you have messy hamsters? and are all the boys more messy than the girlies? |

Sleepy Time In The Night Time? |
| Posted by GingaMilla - 11-16-09 01:49 - 2 comments |
|
Since i got my hamster, Kiki. She's always been sleeping through the day time and active at night. Then from about 12pm today which is 15th November for some people with different times around the world, she was awake at this time.. Which she hasn't been in the last 3 days.
When it got to 6pm she came out which is usually a few hours earlier then usual and went back to sleep after half hour on the wheel. Then come back out and 10pm and she has just gone back to sleep literally 20 mins ago.
Is this normal? I've had her out for the 1st time and she was a little scared and bit me so i put her back into the cage. She seems to be alright with me because she let me stroke her and give her a treat after the little incident.
Just wondering is this normal or will she be coming down the 'wet tail'.. |

Suggestions,and Precautions Anyone? |
| Posted by ST's Hamstery - 11-15-09 17:41 - 6 comments |

OK the nice Bartlett Pear tree in my yard decided to, with the help of a wind storm, lose one of it's center limbs. For some time the limb was still hanging on way up out of my reach so it sat and sat drying out quite nicely. This afternoon it finally broke off and came tumbling down. I know fruit sticks are very good for Hamsters and this tree has never been sprayed or chemically treated since 6 years or more so I am sure no harmful chemical residual is on them.
My question is do I do anything other then cut the branch into nice size sticks before handing them over to the critters to enjoy? Being so dry I would not even think of oven baking them. However do they need washing or anything else to prep them for the animals to enjoy. My Dogs have been using other small sub limbs as chewies the whole time we've lived here with no ill effects so my mind is thinking that is is fine to just feed the sticks as is,but my memory remembers the horrible happenings last time I fed the Hamsters a food I thought safe but ended up disaster. Thanks in advance |

Fun Poll Which May Be Interesting |
| Posted by ST's Hamstery - 11-14-09 17:13 - 18 comments |
 |
OK I thought this may be fun for the knowledged as well as those new to Syrians or just not as knowledged yet on Syrian Hamsters.
Below will be multiple Photos of 3 Black Syrian Hamsters. 1 is satin ,while 2 are not. All you have to do is select your choice on which one is the 18 month old on the Poll.
OK here is Hamster A

Hamster B

Hamster C

So there they are now to select which one you feel is the 18 month old and if you would post why you selected that Hamster as the oldest one. Have fun participating in this Poll it is not a test it is just for having fun and for learning what things a new owner may look for when buying a Hamster friend as it is common knowledge that at Pet stores they will try to sell an old hamster as a young one. |

Cushings? |

I have been keeping a close eye on Mira for the last few weeks as she has been having some hair loss and weight loss. The hair loss has been her belly (almost bald at one point, though tufts are growing back) and on her flanks, which was a concern to me. She has been eating and drinking, and weeing normally (nothing excessive) and her weight has been fluctuating from 177 to 195g (220g at her heaviest though that was just after a litter), although she's at the top end of that at the moment she does look like she is thin around the sides, there's kind of loose skin there. In herself she is as bright and bouncy as ever, mad minx that she is.
Now, the skin on her flanks had been looking OK, a little dry in places but nothing too bad, until tonight. I have just got her out and there's a sore on her back.
I will make an appointment at the vet, but in the meantime I have taken some pics and it would be good if anyone could give an opinion on what it might be and if my fears could be likely. I have had two hammies with Cushings and one was 25 years ago so I have not come across it much.
The sore:

Side on (you can see the hair loss pattern)

The other side:

She looks a bit flakey there as I had been brushing her hair through with my fingers - I could not see any sign of mite infestation. She barely uses her wheel too, so it wouldn't be wheel rub. |
