I think I may have given my poor darling Trillian a toy which has lead to her untimely death. it was a dangling cord with wooden shapes, for her to climb on and gnaw. I had bought several and the other hams seemed to enjoy swinging from them and chewing on the wooden parts. Trilly had largely ignored hers as she is (was) exercise phobic She was not herself last night and this morning to my horror I found her dead in her cage. I have just started to clean out her old cage and found bits and pieces of the cord in amongst her food store. I think this means she has eaten the cord and it has caused a blockage/perforation. I am devastated....how could I have been so stupid I have removed the toys from all other hams cages..they all seem to have chewed on the wood only, thank goodness. Please everyone, think long and hard before you purchase toys for your little ones, they may cause more harm than good. my beautiful Trilly, I am so sorry
oh its not your fault. I guess she was one in a million who would chew the cord out of all your hamsters. How could have you known that she was gonna die from it.
oh no, that is so tragic, sleep well little Trilly.
Don't blame yourself. I know how you feel, I am responsible for my hamster Rolo's death, even though it was an accident and I never meant it to happen.
You did what you thought was best, giving her toys that you thought she would enjoy, you weren't to know.

I'm sorry to hear about little Trillian, she was lovely (I met her at London). Please try not to blame yourself. You may never know what caused her death but I know how you will feel about it - I lost a hamster (many moons ago now) called Smudge through an internal blockage and I blamed myself as I accidentally let her out of her cage once and she chewed the carpet up. Again I will never know if this was the cause but I couldn't help dwelling on it and I felt awful.
However she knows that she was loved and you gave her a good life so please try to concentrate on all the joy she had and brought rather than what may have happened at the end.
All so much for your replies, I felt sooo bad this morning, but have calmed down a bit now. I know I will never know for sure what it was that cause her demise, but I will be taking much more care with toys in future. I've also got to pull myself together for all the other hams, we have babes arriving soon (2nd Oct hopefully), so i am looking forward to caring for them. Trilly will always have a special place in my heart, I will remember her gentle ways and smile.

Sorry for your loss. Though right now this may seem moot. Because of what happen you and Trillian may have saved a lot of other hamsters by your accident. I'm sure Trillian was dearly loved and you didn't mean to harm her.

I'm so sorry you lost Trillian It may just have been a coincidence that you found bits in her bed and she died - all small rodents will chew things they shouldn't but most don't swallow it - why should they if it doesn't taste good?
I can understand how bad you feel but you really mustn't hold yourself responsible
I give all my small animals these wooden blocks to chew and play with but my toys are mostly on metal rods - much safer I hope you feel better soon.

Im sorry you lost trillian, but please don't blame yourself, sometimes accidents happen. When you brought the toy, you brought it with love it wasn't your fault.
