It is a sad moment but also a relief she is no longer suffering.
Gem was given an injection of Ivermectin by a licensed Vet to fight off Rodent mites. I'm sure had the vet any clue Gem was super sensitive to the ivermectin she wouldn't have done the treatment. Gem went from a very sweet tempered Gerbil to a very aggressive animal within 24 hours of the treatment. She was showing signs of a problem by the time we had returned home,but since she was just agitated the vet suggested we keep and eye on her and see if she got back to normal the next day. The next day found her attacking her cage mate and almost killing him,and drawing a nasty bite on my arm when I tried to get Pirate out before she succeeded in ending his life. From that day until tonight Gem lived a lonely and secluded life. She was not ill so I felt it unfair to have her PTS. This morning she greeted me in her normal fashion lunging at the tank wall and trying to grab a hold of me,but tonight as I went in after a chat online I found her in total peace and gone. She didn't seem to have suffered any pain in the end, and was in her nest. God speed Gem at least now you are at peace and again healthy as you were before I allowed you to have that injection.  Little Gem medicine for small animals is so thin lined. You didn't know how she would react no one could have, she didn't suffer and that is about all we can ask for in the end. *hugs* At least her mate wasn't to badly hurt.Much non-weird gerbil love. Wow, I've not hear of a reaction to ivermectin like that before. I wonder if she stroked? and it changed her personality? So sorry to hear all you both went through. RIP Gem.
